JP Morgan Video Interview: Explain a Complex Problem

JP Morgan Video Interview: Explain a Complex Problem

Complexity is not the point of the story

The 2027 JP Morgan Video Interview for the Financial Advisor Development Track asks candidates to explain how they reached a solution. A strong response makes the reasoning visible. It shows how the candidate defined the problem, separated signal from noise, chose among options, and checked the result.

The real question

Here is the complete prompt shown in the assessment:

Tell me about a time when you had a complex problem to solve and explain how you arrived at a solution. Describe the situation, the actions you took, and the outcome.

How candidates lose points

  • Inflating the problem: A dramatic setup does not compensate for a vague decision process.
  • Jumping to the answer: The interviewer cannot assess judgment when the analysis disappears between problem and solution.
  • Listing every action: A chronology hides which steps actually changed the decision.
  • Ignoring other people: Complex problems often require clarifying needs, testing assumptions, or aligning stakeholders.
  • Reporting activity instead of outcome: Finishing the task is weaker than showing what improved and how it was verified.

Make the reasoning easy to audit

Choose a situation with real ambiguity and a decision you personally influenced. State the constraint, then explain the two or three pieces of information that mattered most. A hypothetical example could involve conflicting client information, a deadline, and several possible responses. The candidate would confirm priorities, test the highest-risk assumption, compare options, and communicate the recommended path before execution.

  1. Define the problem and the consequence of getting it wrong.
  2. Explain how you broke the problem into decisions.
  3. Show which evidence changed your approach.
  4. End with a measurable result and what you learned from the process.

A concise answer should let the listener reconstruct the decision. That clarity is stronger evidence of problem solving than the word complex itself.
