The 2027 JP Morgan CIB Markets Video Interview tests a specific kind of adaptability. The interviewer is not looking for a story in which persistence eventually wins. They want to see whether you noticed that your method was failing, diagnosed why and made a better decision before the goal was lost.
The actual interview question
Here is the full question:
Tell us about a time when your method to achieving a goal was not leading to a desired outcome. What was the situation? What actions did you take? What was the outcome?
How you lose points
- Choosing a story with no visible failure signal. If nothing showed the method was underperforming, the change can sound arbitrary.
- Calling persistence adaptability. Working longer with the same method does not demonstrate a new judgment.
- Blaming the original plan. A strong answer takes responsibility for testing assumptions rather than criticising other people.
- Jumping straight to the replacement. Without explaining the diagnosis, the new approach looks like luck.
- Reporting an unmeasured success. "It worked better" needs a result tied to time, quality, risk or stakeholder response.
How you pass
A convincing answer makes the turning point visible. Begin with the goal and the original method. Name the signal that showed progress was off track, then explain how you tested the likely cause before changing direction. Finish with evidence that the revised approach improved the outcome.
- Define the goal, the original method and the expectation you were using.
- Identify the evidence that showed the method was not producing the desired result.
- Explain how you diagnosed the cause and selected a different action.
- Quantify the improvement and state what the experience changed in your later work.
Hypothetical example: A student analyst used a long questionnaire to collect requirements for a market brief, but responses arrived late and contradicted one another. After comparing the gaps, she realised the questions were too broad. She replaced the form with three short interviews built around concrete decisions, confirmed the priorities in writing and completed the brief a day before review. The revision reduced follow-up questions and gave the team a clear audit trail.
The answer becomes credible when the change follows evidence. Adaptability is not a personality label; it is a decision that can be explained and evaluated.
