What this is
This 2027 UBS Global Equity Research Video Interview question tests whether you understand the function beyond producing reports. A credible answer should show how researchers gather evidence, form independent views, communicate uncertainty, and help clients or internal stakeholders make better-informed decisions.
The real question
The key is to define the department by the decisions its work supports:
What do you see as the role of the research department in an investment bank?
How you lose points
- Calling it prediction. Research is not valuable because it claims certainty about prices.
- Listing activities only. Mentioning models, reports, and company calls without explaining their purpose leaves the answer unfinished.
- Ignoring independence. A research view needs evidence, challenge, and clear separation between fact and judgment.
- Forgetting the audience. Analysis must be communicated so a decision-maker can understand the thesis, risks, and assumptions.
- Overstating impact. Research informs decisions, but it does not replace a client's objectives, constraints, or final judgment.
How you pass
Build the answer around evidence, interpretation, and decision usefulness. Start with disciplined information gathering, explain how analysts convert it into a differentiated view, and finish with how that view is communicated responsibly.
- Establish the evidence base. Refer to company information, industry conditions, and relevant financial data without inventing specifics.
- Explain the analytical bridge. Show how assumptions, valuation work, and scenario analysis turn information into a view.
- Protect intellectual independence. Emphasize testing the thesis and stating contrary evidence.
- Make uncertainty visible. Identify the catalysts and risks that could change the conclusion.
- Connect to a decision. Explain how clear research helps an audience compare opportunities and risks.
A hypothetical example could be an analyst reviewing a company's results against prior assumptions. Rather than repeating the headline, the analyst would test what changed in the earnings drivers, revise scenarios where justified, and communicate both the updated view and the evidence that could disprove it. That sequence shows why research matters.
