The interviewer wants to see useful progress under uncertainty
PwC's 2027 Video Interview and Written Assessment asks how you handled a new task or incomplete information. Candidates who meet this prompt cold often spend most of the answer describing confusion and leave little time for the decisions that created progress.
A strong story shows that you did not wait for perfect certainty. You identified what mattered, reduced the most dangerous unknowns, and chose a first step that could be checked and corrected.
The real question
Here is the real prompt, word for word:
When have you needed to respond to work on a task or project that was new to you or where you had incomplete information? What was your response, approach and the result for you and the task/project?
How you lose points
- Pretending you knew more than you did. False certainty makes the decisions difficult to trust and hides the real judgment the question is testing.
- Listing every unknown. A long inventory of missing information does not show which gaps could actually change the outcome.
- Waiting for complete instructions. Pausing all work may protect comfort, but it does not demonstrate ownership or proportionate action.
- Saying you asked the team. The answer needs the specific question, source, or checkpoint that moved the work forward.
- Reporting only the final success. The interviewer also needs to hear how your approach affected you and the task.
Use an uncertainty to action sequence
The answer should make each decision traceable to a risk, an information gap, or a time constraint.
- Define the decision. State what had to be delivered, for whom, by when, and what a poor result would affect.
- Separate facts from assumptions. List what was known, what was unknown, and which assumption would be most damaging if it proved false.
- Target the critical gap. Use the fastest credible source, stakeholder, sample, or prior example to reduce the uncertainty that matters most.
- Choose a reversible step. Move ahead on work that can be tested or adjusted while keeping irreversible decisions behind a review point.
- Close with two results. Explain the outcome for the task and the change in your own method, confidence, or future behaviour.
A clearly labelled hypothetical example could involve receiving an unfamiliar data request with an incomplete definition. The candidate might confirm the decision the output must support, test a small sample, document assumptions, and schedule a checkpoint before processing the full dataset.
