The headline is only your starting point
This 2027 JP Morgan Video Interview question for Markets tests whether a candidate can turn current information into an organized market view. The headline matters, but the real evidence is the chain of reasoning that follows it.
The real question
The full prompt asks for both selection and judgment:
Discuss a recent headline in the financial markets that caught your attention and why?
How candidates lose points
- Repeating a summary. Facts alone do not show how you interpret markets.
- Choosing a headline you barely understand. Recognition is not enough when follow-up questions arrive.
- Jumping between asset classes. A scattered answer hides the main transmission mechanism.
- Ignoring the market reaction. The headline and the price response are not always the same story.
- Giving no personal reason. The final word asks why this event earned your attention.
Build a clean cause-and-effect chain
Name the headline in one sentence. Explain the surprise, policy change, earnings signal, or supply-demand shift at its center. Then trace one consequence through the market. Finish with what remains uncertain and why the issue matters to you.
A hypothetical answer could use an inflation release. The candidate might explain that the surprise changed rate expectations, affected bond yields, and altered the relative appeal of rate-sensitive equities. The close should identify the unresolved question, such as whether one data point represents noise or a durable trend. That progression shows disciplined interpretation rather than headline recall.
