What this is
The JP Morgan 2027 Video Interview for Data Science tests whether your expertise remains useful outside a technical audience. The assessor wants evidence that you can preserve accuracy while making a decision easier for someone else.
The real question
The prompt asks for both the audience problem and your method:
Tell me about a time when you had to present complex information to someone with limited knowledge of the subject. Describe how you approached the situation.
How you lose points
- Saying you removed jargon. That is a tactic, not a complete communication strategy.
- Showing off the technical detail. Expertise becomes noise when it does not serve the listener's decision.
- Assuming what the audience knows. Strong communicators test the starting point before explaining.
- Using an analogy that changes the meaning. Simplicity cannot come at the cost of accuracy.
- Skipping evidence of understanding. A nod from the listener is not a reliable result.
How you pass
Define the audience, the decision they needed to make, and the technical barrier. Explain how you selected the essential concepts, built a simple visual or example, and checked understanding. Keep the focus on the action your explanation enabled.
A credible hypothetical example is explaining a churn model to a commercial manager. Instead of opening with algorithm metrics, you would start with the business decision, show the three strongest drivers, translate uncertainty into a range, and use two customer scenarios. You would then ask the manager to interpret one case and adjust the explanation where confusion remained.
- Identify the listener's goal before choosing detail.
- Use a clear hierarchy from conclusion to evidence.
- Translate technical terms without distorting them.
- Invite a question that tests genuine understanding.
- Show the decision or behaviour that improved.
Clear communication is not a shorter technical lecture. It is a design choice that helps another person act correctly.
