JP Morgan Risk Interview: Adapting Your Communication

JP Morgan Risk Interview: Adapting Your Communication

What this question is testing

The evidence is not simply that you communicated well. It is that you noticed the first approach was not landing, diagnosed why and deliberately changed it.

The real interview question

Tell us about a time when you changed your communication approach to better convey a message to a customer or teammate. Describe the situation, the steps you took, and the outcome.

Where answers lose credibility

  • Describing a polished presentation with no need to adapt
  • Claiming the audience was confused without explaining the signal
  • Changing only the amount of detail rather than the communication method
  • Leaving the outcome as a vague improvement

A stronger answer framework

  • Set out the audience, message and consequence of misunderstanding.
  • Identify the cue that showed your original approach was ineffective.
  • Explain the specific adjustment: format, language, sequencing, evidence or channel.
  • Show how you checked understanding and what changed as a result.

A strong answer contrasts before and after. You might replace technical language with a decision-focused summary, add a visual, invite questions and ask the listener to confirm the next step. The result should demonstrate understanding or action, not just appreciation.
