Knowing the answer is not enough
Bank of America's 2027 Video Interview includes a question about acting as the subject matter expert on a project. It cuts through candidates who can do technical work but cannot make that work useful to someone else.
The strongest preparation starts with a project where the audience genuinely lacked context. That gap gives the candidate room to show judgment, translation, and ownership.
The real project question
This is the question word for word:
Describe a time when you were working on a project where you were the subject matter expert on a specific topic. What was the goal of the project and how did you use your subject matter expertise to make sure everyone was able to understand what you were conveying?
Why technical answers miss
- Starting with the method. The listener needs the project goal and audience before the technical detail.
- Using jargon as proof. Complex language can hide whether the candidate understood the issue well enough to simplify it.
- Treating communication as a presentation. The answer should show how understanding was checked, not just how slides were delivered.
- Leaving out the decision. The interviewer needs to know what the audience could do after the explanation.
- Claiming everyone understood. A question, revision, test, or result should demonstrate that claim.
Show the translation work
A strong answer identifies the goal, the people who needed the information, and the exact knowledge gap. It then explains how the candidate reduced complexity without removing the point that mattered for the decision.
Useful actions include replacing terminology with an analogy, separating the headline from supporting detail, using a simple visual, or giving different stakeholders different levels of depth. The candidate also needs a feedback loop, such as questions, a short check, or a revised recommendation.
The outcome closes the story. It can be approval, fewer errors, faster execution, or a better client discussion, as long as the audience's understanding clearly contributed to it.
